Back at the end of 2018 I made a really hard but much needed decision. 2019 would be the year of saying NO. Now I would never, ever describe myself as a push over or anything but I am the type of person who feels like they need to do all the things all at the same time.

At the time I was running my business, trying to launch and be consistent with a travel/foodie blog, running a nonprofit organization, an active member of a local service club plus all the normal every day things such as wife, homemaker, etc.

People were already contacting me to see if I would be interested in doing this or that or helping with this project here or there and when I sat down to look at my calendar for 2019 the thought of adding another thing onto my plate made me want to vomit but then again so did saying NO.

My first step was saying no to the people asking right now.

No, I’m not going to help publish a monthly newsletter for the service club

No, I can’t put together more fundraisers for the nonprofit(this was a hard one but I already do 2 big ones each year and about a dozen small ones, I was already burnt out from this)

No, I can’t sit down for every coffee chat request to pick my brain that I get in my inbox(even though I want to help as many people as possible)

It. Was. ROUGH.

It was uncomfortable and clearly something that needed to be done earlier.

After it was all done I didn’t immediately feel great.

My inner “yes woman” was going through all the scenarios again.

However, by the next day it felt fantastic.

I was no longer sitting their racking my head on how the hell am I going to fit these other things into my already overly packed schedule.

Are you ready to say NO to more things in 2020?

Look over everything you’re already doing, maybe you even have something you need to say no to continuing.

Set a date to get the answer to whatever party is asking and plan how you are going to say no(to help avoid you from saying yes if you get overwhelmed)

Put together an automatic response to help you get to NO faster, something like: “Hey, thanks so much for thinking for me but I won’t be able to do XXX.” Or “Hey, thanks for reaching out, unfortunately I’m not available for coffee chats right now however you can always join the conversation in my Facebook group(link it) or schedule a 1-on-1 session with me!”

Chances are if you are like me and worry what people will think if you say no, it’s all in your head. Most people won’t care that you said no and will respect that you have set boundaries for yourself!

What are you planning to say NO to in 2020?
